Originally from Havana, Cuba, Mayelin’s journey to the United States began in 1980 when she, along with her family, sought refuge from Communism to embrace the freedoms offered by America. Fluent in Spanish and deeply rooted in her Cuban heritage, Mayelin has passed down this sense of pride to her two children, Karina and Elvis.
Hillsborough County has been Mayelin’s home for the majority of her life. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Criminology from the University of South Florida in 1996 before graduating Cum Laude from Stetson University College of Law in 2001.
Stepping directly into a role as a Prosecutor at the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office after law school, Mayelin dedicated nearly 22 years to advocating for the victims of Hillsborough County. Her unwavering passion for speaking up for those without a voice has been the driving force behind her career.
